Workplace Wellbeing: The growing importance of caring for emotional needs

It has long been recognised that a happy workforce is a productive workforce. In what seems to be an increasingly chaotic world, employee health and wellbeing is a key asset in the corporate battle for survival.

Managing health, work and wellbeing is the responsibility of both the employer and the employee. Employee benefit schemes often deal with changing habits (diet, stopping smoking, health checks, exercise) to improve physical health. With depression and anxiety now one of the leading causes of sickness absence, supporting emotional health is rapidly moving up the agenda of many businesses.

For a business, an emotionally resilient workforce helps them bounce back in tough and uncertain times. Looking after the emotional as well as the physical wellbeing in the workplace can increase productivity and employee engagement. For the individual, it means a healthy balanced life and feeling valued by their employer.

Coaching is a great way to help staff increase their self awareness, emotional responsiveness and personal resilience. The Transformational, or developmental coaching approach explores current and past influences from both personal and professional lives that influence behaviour. It encourages each person to identify and challenge limiting thoughts, beliefs and behaviours that are preventing them from achieving goals and aspirations.
