Bah Humbug or Christmas Cheer?!

A couple of weeks ago, I had a cold and was feeling rather sorry for myself, so I decided to curl up on the sofa and watch a Christmas movie. To be honest, it’s my guilty pleasure and I like any excuse to indulge! I briefly read the overview about the film, but didn’t really pay that much attention. It mentioned the word Christmas, so it would be a feel good movie – right? Wrong! Very wrong!! It turned out to be about the shadow side of Father Christmas – the evil alter ego whose purpose was to punish families and take their souls to the dark side…

Well, that wasn’t what I was expecting at all! Surely Father Christmas doesn’t have a dark side, a shadow side? Then again, maybe he does. We all have those aspects of ourselves that we wouldn’t consider our most redeeming features. Christmas is a time of year that seems to bring out either the very best, or the every worst in each of us.

Are you full of Christmas cheer? Singing and dancing along to Christmas songs with glee as you peruse the specially selected gift displays created to tempt you at this time of year? Does your heart soar at the idea of buying gifts for all of your loved ones, and you can’t wait to see their faces as they rip the paper off on Christmas morning? Can’t wait to put the tree and the decorations up, and you love the contrast of dark nights and all the twinkling lights? Looking forward to hearing the sleigh bells just before Father Christmas comes down the chimney! Does your inner child take over and your excitement bubble over?

Maybe you’re a Bah Humbug (like my dearly beloved… enough said!). You’d prefer it if Christmas never happened. The tree shouldn’t go up until Christmas Eve and should come down on Boxing Day. Shopping for gifts should be banned. It’s just an excuse for hyped up commercialism and over indulgence. And as for wrapping presents… Well, that’s just a form of torture designed to waste significant periods of time!

Whichever one you are, it’s your choice. For some people, it’s a lonely time, accentuated by the messages of family and togetherness across every form of media. For others, a deeply spiritual time of year. For many, it’s just another day. What’s more important is to remember that it’s a time of acceptance, love and goodwill to all - whatever their opinion of the festivities.

For me, it’s a magical, sparkly, exciting time of year. Christmas just makes everything just that little bit better.

Whatever your position, just let your true self shine this season.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Now, where are those mince pies?
